a day worth celebrating

Happy New Year Ethiopia!

And to the people of Ulyanovsk, Russia, Happy Day of Conception!

And while I could explain why today, September 12, is New Year's Day in Ethiopia and why, it is not only New Year's Day, but the year 2000, I'm not. I'm going to tell you more about the Day of Conception. No offense to the fine, celebratory people of Ethiopia.

So we all know Russia's screwed population-wise: high death rate, low birthrate, large immigrating population... So, what did the local government in this region decide to do about it? Improve their healthcare system? No. Create more jobs or incentive for people to stay? No. That's right, give everyone the day off and bribe them, er, encourage them to procreate! That's right, folks, give birth to a little babuska of joy on June 12th, the birthday of comrade Vladimir Lenin, and you could win cash, prizes or even a new SUV!

And not to leave out the more solemn celebrations today, Happy New Year or Rosh Hashanah Jewish people!

And may you have a nice month of dawn-to-dusk fasting Muslims of the world. Here's to Ramadan!

Phew. In light of all of these events, I'm kind of wondering why I've got nothing going on.
