batten down the hatches

I learned a new weather word today, seiche. When I heard the woman on the radio issue a seiche warning, I thought, "Say-shh?" She went on to claim that water levels on the eastern side of Lake Michigan had dropped more than two feet facilitating the warning. That water has to go somewhere and it will inevitably slosh over the western shore of the lake, meaning here in Chicago. It's sort of like a lake tsunami or as my link illustrates, water sloshing back-and-forth in a bathtub — only in this case, a bathtub a little larger than the country of Croatia. The lake never ceases to impress me.
