Today or next year I'll always be near...
I've never known much about Trish Keenan. I didn't even know her age until it was printed today (she was 42). That said, the music she created has greatly enhanced much of my adult life.
I was introduced to Broadcast when Nick lamented his lost copy of Work and Non Work. I happened to be thumbing through a record shop shortly thereafter and came across it. I gave it to him for my birthday. In the interim, I'd slipped the record on to my turntable and was frightened by its eeriness and intensity -- that said, it's the record I most wanted to hear tonight. Shortly thereafter, we had the opportunity to see Broadcast perform. It was both an intimate and a mind-blowing experience; I became a devoted fan then and there.
In the years that followed I've been excited by the possibility of each new recording and live performance. I took for granted that I would have years to enjoy what Trish Keenan created and have learned today that I will miss a person I have never met.
This is the one that tripped me up that first time I listened to this record, but there are so many beautiful tracks, you should check them ALL out. Really, do yourself a favor.

We've missed you, Amelia Earhart
Today's news that remains found on an uninhabited Pacific atoll are believed to be those of Amelia Earhart has inspired me to make a reappearance myself. It's been too long, maybe not 73 years too long, but long.

How many times can you say, "Who dat!" in one blog post?

Svenska
And because, like Barry White, I think you can't have too much of a good thing, this morning I made Swedish pancakes. This is not something anyone in my family makes, but I had a jar of lingonberry jam from Ikea laying around. For these I used a Mark Bittman recipe, cranked up the Dungen and dug-in. Ett Gott Nytt År, everyone!Monday, December 07, 2009

Endless Mountains, endless
This time last week, we were winding through back roads past Scranton; slowly making our way to Nick's Dad's cabin in the Endless Mountains. Frustrated by intermittent rain and the cold, we couldn't help but think that our weekend was just not going the way we'd planned. As if the weather weren't disappointing enough, we were a week early for the annual haunted hay ride put on by the local high school - my personal favorite fall event in that neck of the woods.
When we finally arrived at the cabin it was by the extreme darkness of night, not a star was visible and by contrast, we were surprised by the colorful landscape that would greet us come morning.
Needless to say, we spent a couple of days trudging through wet woods, observing flora and fauna and most notably, huddled by the fire, failing to ever completely dry our wet socks. That said, I spent a good amount of time working on my first knit sweater. It's for a toddler. And I couldn't help but think, very much in line with Mother Nature's color scheme for the weekend.
All said, I would have liked to have spent another day in the woods: cold and wet, struggling to keep the fire lit. It looks like this weekend in New York will be damp, too. Maybe I'll finish that sweater and take a walk to see the foliage, all with the knowledge that I have a hearty stock of dry socks at home.

Are you wet yet?, hole 3, by Openhop in the forefront.
Pachinko Putt-Putt by Meat Pallet, hole 7.

Willaimsburg, the (a)bridge(d) version
Oy Vey, indeed! The sign for incoming traffic read, "Welcome to Brooklyn. You name it... we got it!" Conversely, at the other end of the Williamsburg Bridge, you're merely greeted by a sign reading, "Welcome to Manhattan." Yawn.
Stenciled by a hipster no doubt.

Iron Maiden Voyage
I went for a walk this evening through Hudson River Park to try out my new camera. I came across sunset vistas, warehouses and geese waddling around to the sounds of Matt and Kim playing on Pier 54.
Nick documented the learning curve.
I then made my way to The Village where I was pleased to find that construction in Washington Square Park is finally complete. Yay!

Camera phone holiday special from Queens
DUQB or Down Under Queensboro Bridge. So, it's not as catchy as DUMBO. Give it time. And as a bonus, from The Great Gatsby: "The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge, is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world"
The following two shots were taken at Deitch Studios on the waterfront. You can see more photos of the current installation, Pig, here.
Random mural showing an oddly angry-looking Queensboro Bridge monster.
Manhattan skyline from the Pulaski Bridge. The most interesting thing about this bridge just might be that it is that it's the halfway point during the NYC Marathon.
Taken on the Pulaski Bridge. Home, like no other place in the world!
As much as I enjoy these camera phone round-ups, I'm pleased to announce that my new point-and-shot should be arriving in the mail any day. Yay! A little camera, that's only a camera!

"Bill" assuring "Hillary" that she can still be the "President of New York." This one was taken at The 2008 Village Halloween Parade.
Rockaway Beach, surf's up!
Taken a few weeks ago at The Highline, love-love it!
Taken last weekend at Coney Island for the The Mermaid Parade.
More to come...
